Course Introduction

All our scent courses are six weeks in length, and each class last for one hour, with each session building upon the previous one. Within our classes, you’ll be working your dog throughout the majority of the session. We always have two instructors present in each class, so this means there’ll be plenty of opportunity for one on one time, as you learn about scent work with your dog.

Here is an overview of what you’ll be covering in the Introduction to Scent Work course:

  1. Search observation – observing your dog to see how they search and reading their body language
  2. Understanding and implementing the components of successful scent work
    • Scent identification – learning to recognise a specific scent
    • Indication – develop an indication so they can tell you when they have found the target scent
    • Searching
  3. A variety of searches: simple, linear and blind searches

If this is your first course with us, you will also be given a scent kit to take home and practice straight away. All scent equipment required will be provided for each session.

You will, however, need to bring with you the following:

  • Harness
  • Long line
  • Clicker
  • Treats (plenty of them)
  • Mobile phone (to video your dog at work)

Upcoming Courses for Introduction to Scent Work:

New courses to be confirmed

We’re not ones to suck the joy out of life but please take time to read the following rules. These rules are for the benefit of everyone, both owners and dogs. We also expect all dog owners to be respectful of the venues we use for our courses and to clear up after your dogs. We’ll always have some spare poo bags handy in case you forget yours.

Yorkshire Scent Dogs operate a force free training environment.

Once you sign up for one of our courses you are saying that you have read and agree with the rules which we have in place.

Rules for attendance to all courses:

All dogs must remain on lead whilst outside of the training arena and under strict control. On your first visit your dog should be kept away from contact with other dogs until specifically instructed to by either instructor. Please respect other owners and their dogs if they choose to avoid any contact with other people and their dogs. Bear in mind that initially, you are entering a new environment and this can be very intense for some dogs and they may not behave in a way in which they normally do or may behave out of character. If you feel you need to remove your dog from the training environment in order to lessen their anxieties or distress then speak with the instructors who will try to resolve the situation in a way which means you don’t miss out on the learning.

Flexi-leads are not permitted in the class, but you may wish to use a long training lead when needed.

As force free instructors, the use of physical force and punishment-based training techniques are not permitted within Yorkshire Scent Dogs training sessions. Anyone employing such methods will be asked to leave the course and no refunds will be issued.

The following items are NOT PERMITTED in the sessions under any circumstances:

  • Electronic (E-Collars) training collars, including anti-bark or citronella type collars
  • Any other device that causes discomfort, pain or fear to the dog
  • Prong or pinch collars

Bitches who are in season are not permitted in the sessions or on the premises. If your bitch does come into season part way through the course, no refund will be issued, but please let us know so that we can make alternative arrangements, for example, offering you another place on another course at a later date.

Any dog who is ill or injured should not attend and should be kept at home. Please call/email us to let us know if you cannot attend for any reason and depending upon the length of absence due to illness/injury, we will look at what alternatives we can make.

All dogs should have up to date vaccinations, flea and worming treatment.

We actively encourage you to take photographs and video of yourself and your own dog. However, you are not permitted to take photos or film or other handlers and their dogs, any spectators or the instructors without prior permission from the individuals.

Payments and fees: We are a professional organisation and full payment must be made in advance to secure any places for any courses. We will return 90% of your payment if you notify us via email 60 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations within 59 days of the course date will not be refunded; transference to another course will only be considered in circumstances of illness, injury or your dog coming into season.
